Abstract: A review of decision support systems' (DSS) history, evolution, taxonomy, and application in the planning/scheduling of manufacturing/service systems is presented. Different research conducted is categorised based on the DSS type applied - as well as the domain of the subject - and their limitations are explored. The investigation in literature indicates that although a considerable theoretical and practical advancement has been achieved in DSSs, in most of the research the applicability of the DSSs proposed remains an open question. Additionally, the integration of DSSs - which is an important issue in terms of proposing a comprehensive solution for manufacturing/service systems - has not been addressed in most of the DSSs reviewed.
