Energy efficient radio network planning including multi-RAT perspective

Abstract: This paper presents a cellular network planning concept that contributes to the green network aspect focusing on the energy efficient application of multi-radio access technology (RAT) system. The proposed procedure plans a new radio access network (RAN) automatically to improve the capacity of an existing system and fulfil predefined planning criteria, taking the interaction with the same operator's other, already existing mobile technologies into account. The initial estimation of number of new stations is not necessary because network dimensioning is the part of the algorithm. The positions of new stations, directions of antenna lobes, powers of transmitters, necessary resources and co-siting structure for the guaranteed coverage are determined by separately designed sub-methods optimising the energy consumption of network. Unifying these, they provide a solution to the energy effective, NP-complete multi-RAT network design problem. The effectiveness of the different parts of this procedure is discussed one by one by showing numerical results.
