International Journal of Sustainable Aviation (IJSA), Vol. 2, No. 2, 2016

Abstract: The problem with radiations is the fact that not one of our senses can detect them although they are all around us. In this paper, the research studies on cosmic radiation exposure and cancer risk of aviation crew members conducted around the world are presented and their results analysed. Legal regulation has the effect on decrease in harmful effects of cosmic radiation by limiting the time spent in flying for air crew while the special protection from this type of radiation for passengers is mainly not predicted. Irrespective of the fact that both European and national legal regulations include cosmic radiation, the public is mostly unaware of the risk of cosmic radiation exposure in aviation. Informing of public on ionising radiation coming from nature and taking steps for its reduction should be one of the priorities of our society in the next long-term period.
