System reliability measures in the presence of common cause failures

Abstract: Standby and k-out-of-n redundancies are one of the most famous ways to improve the reliability of a system. k-out-of-n:G/F redundancies imply that at least k component is required to work properly for successful/unsuccessful operation of the system. This paper deals with the mathematical modelling of a system in which both of the redundancies i.e., standby and k-out-of-n:F are considered. The considered system consists two subsystems, namely A and B. Subsystem A has two units in parallel configuration and it is connected to subsystem B, which is of 2-out-of-3:F type, in series configuration. Subsystem A has one unit in standby redundancy. The model is analysed with the help of Markov process and supplementary variable technique. Various reliability characteristics are found and demonstrated with the help of graphs.
