Importance and effectiveness of human related issues in implementing total productive maintenance: a study of Indian manufacturing organisations

Abstract: Total productive maintenance (TPM) has been recognised as one of the significant operation strategy for the improvement in equipment availability, performance and quality with assuring health and safety of employees and protection of environment. The goal of the TPM programme is to markedly increase production while at the same time increasing employee morale and job satisfaction. During the implementation of TPM in Indian manufacturing organisation, the primary variable that is most difficult to control is human element. The objective of this paper is to discuss the importance of various types of human issues among top management and workers level. The intent of this paper is to determine whether these human issues really play a vital role for the successful implementation of TPM. A secondary objective of this study is to visualise sub-group differences and perceptions in terms of the degree of importance in each of the identified human issues.
