Impact of sensing errors on the performance of an unreliable opportunistic spectrum sharing system

Abstract: Opportunistic Spectrum Sharing (OSS) is a promising solution for efficient spectrum utilisation. In this paper, we analytically model an unreliable OSS system and investigate the impact of sensing errors on the system performance. The OSS system consists of primary users and secondary users that share a number of channels over a coverage area. Both initiating secondary users and ongoing secondary users sense the channels and perform appropriate activities. A buffer is introduced to temporarily hold the call of an ongoing secondary user when there is no channel available upon the call arrival of a primary user. In unreliable sensing, the sensing errors from either initiating or ongoing secondary users cause false alarm and misdetection events, which may impose different impacts on both types of users. We present the analytic solutions for the OSS system and provide numerical results for validation. The proposed modelling method is expected to be used for design and performance evaluation of future OSS networks.
