Investigation of microstructural and mechanical properties of Al-Al2O3 nanocomposite fabricated by accumulative roll bonding process

Abstract: The present work is an attempt to study the Al-Al2O3 composite properties applying accumulative roll bonding process. For this purpose, alumina sheets and ultrafine alumina powder were used. A given amount of spheroidized ultrafine alumina particles was sprayed on the surface of the sheet via the plasma spraying technique. In the next step, the sheets were piled and rolled up to ten consecutive cycles. The microstructure of the applied layer was examined using electron scanning and optical microscopy. Also, the crystallographic phase structure as well as the particle size was determined using the X-ray diffraction method. Mechanical properties including hardness and strength were also evaluated. The obtained results revealed that not only alumina has been properly coated on the sheet's surface, but also the roll bonding process has resulted in the formation of aluminium composites successfully strengthened with alumina grains. The crystallite size was measured to be in nanometre scale and the bonding process was observed to result in a remarkable improvement in hardness and strength.
