Abstract: The internet of things (IoT) is a topical area of research in which the energy-efficiency of the resource-constrained IoT devices is important. Wake-up radio is an interesting technology allowing significant cut-down of IoT devices' power consumption. It allows long sleep mode periods while enabling real-time controllability of the nodes. This paper proposes a solution for applying IETF standard protocols to the wake-up radio equipped sensor network. The complete wake-up radio equipped system, in which the nodes work as IoT service providers, was built to inspect energy consumption and response time of the nodes. Comparing between IP-based single radio and wake-up radio networks the results show that notable energy savings can be achieved with wake-up radio on both single-hop and multi-hop scenarios with predictable response times. On a packet rate of one packet per minute, the energy saving was 86% on a single-hop scenario and 45 to 79% on a three-hop scenario. Based on our implementation we also proposed two improvements for RPL routing scheme which enables more robust routing operation.
