Abstract: In contemporary learning environments, tablet computers are often used to display digital textbooks; however, they are not expected to replace all traditional learning tools. Initially, we developed the paper-top interface (PTI) as a note-taking support system based on augmented-reality technology. The PTI is a fusion of digital textbooks and traditional learning tools. The PTI system projects a digital textbook onto a paper notebook using a pico projector and enables students to annotate the textbook using a pencil and an eraser. In the present study, we focused primarily on interactive quizzes in a digital textbook and extended the original PTI by diversifying interactions through various input operations. We performed comparative experiments to clarify the effectiveness of the PTI as note-taking support for a digital textbook. The experimental results show that the PTI is not inferior to other note-taking techniques and that the new interactions can increase learning motivation and effectiveness.
