Abstract: Most of ongoing research directions on wireless multimedia sensor networks (WMSNs) are discussed as an energy problem. In this paper, we see WMSNs as a service-oriented planning issue. Our aim is to demonstrate the value of a planning phase supported by service-oriented design for multimedia monitoring based on WMSNs. The main problem we address in this paper is how to reduce the problems related to the deployment of the monitoring application during the pre-deployment phase. We present a new planning tool called monitoring service using a wireless multimedia sensor network (MSWMSN) that allows users to size up and plan WMSN monitoring scenarios under service level agreements (SLAs) during the pre-deployment phase. With our tool, we can load the surveillance area, generate several test scenarios by putting the required parameters (e.g., positioning, processing, routing, MAC), perform and classify the generated scenarios using a combined subjective-objective evaluation and finally, choose the best scenario for deployment.
