Composition analysis and influence of different (Ti,Ta)C-Co-Ni content on hardness of WC-Co-based cemented carbide

Abstract: Cemented carbide is the most commonly used material as the cutting head of coal mining tools. In this study, seven specimens resulted from three grade cutting picks have been investigated systematically for the compositions and the hardness. Composition results shown that all the specimens were WC-Co-based cemented carbides. For specimen types A and B, all the cemented carbides have high mass ratio of TaC/TiC (2.00-7.50) and Co/Ni (10.10-34.34). The addition of TaC in cemented carbide is mainly to improve the hardness, while TiC to improve the oxidation resistance at high temperature. Hardness measurements indicated that the promoting effect of (TaC + TiC) on the hardness of cemented carbide is greatly higher than the weakening effect caused by the increment of (Co + Ni).
