Simulation of paddy drying characteristics at different drying air conditions

Abstract: In this paper, the paddy drying process in Louisiana State University (LSU) dryer system at constant hot drying air flow has been studied. Experimental observations for paddy temperature and its relation with moisture contents has been established for longer drying duration for thick and medium size of paddy. An integrated heat flow diagram of the process is modelled using MATLAB Simulink, which incorporates the physical and thermal properties of paddy and their variation during drying. The developed model is simulated for varying atmospheric and operating conditions. Simulated results of developed model are verified with real-time observations of drying process. Results show that the drying time of paddy is affected by variations in atmospheric conditions for classified medium and thick paddy quality. Drying rate of paddy decreases with increase in relative humidity and increases with higher ambient temperature. It is also seen that drying rate is higher in initial drying period and gradually decreases as drying time progresses.
