Abstract: Selection of leaders in a hierarchical network influences network behaviour to a great extent. In PEGASIS, leader node is selected randomly in rounds and data is transmitted to the leader using token passing scheme. Random selection of leader results in redundant transmission paths. This ultimately results in more consumption of energy. Thus, a more suitable leader selection approach is required to balance energy consumption of the whole network. In this paper, along with new leader selection criteria, a three way hierarchical structure is adopted to lower the link distances among nodes. The proposed technique shows an improvement over other chain protocols like ECBSN and PEGASIS on energy consumption by 12% and 9.2% respectively. Also, death of the first node is delayed by 87 and 297 rounds from ECBSN and PEGASIS respectively.
