Abstract: In the paper, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are used in the assessment of the grinding wheel active surface (GWAS). The analysis of the processes of wear and the phenomena that cause them, are also presented and discussed. The experimental investigations were carried out on a grinding wheel made from microcrystalline sintered corundum grains after the process of plunge grinding of the workpiece made from steel 100Cr6. The high efficiency of the proposed methods was noted, which has given a reliable indication of the tribological phenomena taking place in the area of contact between grinding wheel and workpiece. Therefore, it allows for improvement of the machining conditions or modification of the grinding wheel construction.
