Abstract: In this manuscript we design a healthcare monitoring system for chronic disease. The system depends on the use of internet of things (IoT) technologies, and is most suitable for patients with chronic cardiac disease. The foremost functions of the system are the following capabilities: 1) obtaining body sensors' data; 2) analysing health status on a smartphone; 3) transferring bodily information to smartphones through a body sensor network and a wireless body area network using the ZigBee and Bluetooth technology. We present an energy approximation and optimisation algorithm to achieve these functions on smartphones in an energy-efficient manner. Medical records are accumulated and analysed by the smartphone, and the smartphone transfers that into health information database server for further analysis and processing. We enable the system to automatically send an emergency alerting notification to the specialist doctor, family relative, and monitoring authority in an emergency condition. Evaluation results show that the system provides a high quality and effective healthcare service for chronic patients. The system also extends the lifespan of healthcare monitoring smartphone battery.
