Abstract: In the present paper, adding a small amount of magnesium (Mg) content on the dry sliding wear behaviour for recycled aluminium has been reported. Recycled aluminium composition, normal pressures and sliding distances on recycled aluminium at constant room temperature was also studied. The cast alloys and worn surfaces were characterised by SEM/EDX microanalysis and hardness test. The results indicate that, the wear rate of recycled aluminium increases with an increase in normal pressures and sliding distances in all the cases and decreases with 0.7wt.% Mg added to the recycled aluminium. This is due to the modification and solid solution strengthening and precipitation hardening. The worn surface study indicates that the formation of iron-rich oxide layer between the mating surfaces during sliding, improves sliding wear performance as the EDAX results show a reduction of ferrous content from abraded surfaces by more than 60%.
