Abstract: Layer removal method applied to a common case of the surface layer residual stress state with two normal and in-plain shear components is discussed. Rigid kinematics processes such as cutting, ball and diamond burnishing typically produce this state. The equations obtained serve to calculate the components of a plane stress state using results of testing two strips cut off a plate or ring and strip cut off a thin-walled tube. In-depth distributions of three stress components are obtained. All components of a same plane stress state must be measured with the same precision. In order to follow this principle, certain ratios between dimensions of specimens and of device elements are to be respected. The corresponding equations are developed and examples of their practical applications are presented. Finally, the article includes preparative steps for testing specimens, discussion and conclusion.
