Abstract: This paper presents design of an optimised PID controller for single input single output (SISO) systems with time delay. The three control parameters Kp, Ki and Kd of PID controller are estimated by tuning the PID controller using different intelligent algorithms. Bacterial foraging optimisation (BFO) and particle swarm optimisation (PSO) is the topic of recent research. BFO is an intelligent algorithm based on foraging and chemotactic process of bacteria. Similarly, PSO mimic is the social behaviour of the individuals in a bird flock or fish school while searching for the best food location. In this article, a new algorithm named modified bacterial foraging optimisation (combining both the advantages of BFO and PSO) is implemented for better tuning of PID controller to control the SISO systems with time delay. The simulation is performed in Matlab/Simulink environment.
