Energy and the environment

Abstract: Increasing the efficiency of energy production and utilisation is both an environmentally and commercially sound concept. Examples from the chemical industry, one of the largest consumers of energy, are presented to demonstrate the strides it has made in energy efficiency over the last decade through the application of technology, skill and management methods to maintain international competitiveness. Establishing the correct balance between meeting the world's increasing energy requirements, while maintaining control over the environment, will require unprecedented international research, effort and co-operation. The transfer of new technologies to the developing nations, whose demands will have an overwhelming impact on the world's energy resources, represents both a challenge and an opportunity to the industrialised world.
