Abstract: The purpose of this article is to explore four themes related to the role of energy in sustainable development: (i) environmental stewardship is a vital link between energy and sustainable economic growth; (ii) developed and developing economics require diverse, reasonably priced energy supplies to achieve sustainable development goals; (iii) market-oriented societies are critical to achieving sustained economic growth; (iv) all sectors of society bear a responsibility to produce and use energy efficiently and with a minimum impact on the environment.
