Abstract: This paper introduces the development of an original methodology for knowledge representation, generation and mobilization in emergency preparedness, planning and management in the nuclear and chemical industries, by means of knowledge processing and integration. The development of an original and practical oriented framework for the design of three independent Knowledge and Decision Support Systems, namely ETH-NUKERISK, ETH RISKMONITOR, and ETH-CHEMRISK is reported. Direct applicability to the Swiss conditions (legal aspects as well as specific geographical and environmental conditions) is highlighted. The authors enumerate a series of research directions towards sophisticated and intelligent systems for emergency planning and management.
