Security of energy supply
by Matthias Hessling
International Journal of Global Energy Issues (IJGEI), Vol. 8, No. 1/2/3, 1995

Abstract: Energy is the 'sinews' of any economic activity. In highly developed countries in particular, security of energy supply - and especially security of electricity supply - is of utmost importance and constitutes a major objective of energy policy. For the European Union, however, the growing dependency on energy imports involves a high risk. Measures to improve security of supply include the utilization of domestic energy sources, e.g. coal or - if sufficient public and political acceptance exists - nuclear energy. These and other measures - such as the diversification of energy sources and suppliers - are evaluated and their application in several countries is discussed in detail.
