International Journal of Global Energy Issues (IJGEI), Vol. 9, No. 1/2, 1997

Abstract: Many countries of Central and Eastern Europe have undertaken ambitious programmes aimed at transforming their traditional government-controlled industrial and service monopolies into competitive enterprises. One consequence of these programmes and rapid economic growth is the increase in demand for energy. Using Poland as an example, we discuss the transformations that take place in the energy generation and distribution sectors in Eastern and Central Europe that are intended to better meet current needs and future expectations of their customers. We discuss several issues facing the industry. They include implementing new technologies, environmental problems, privatization and organizational issues.
