International Journal of Global Energy Issues (IJGEI), Vol. 9, No. 1/2, 1997

Abstract: There has been a dramatic increase in legislative initiatives in the United States to foster the transfer of public technology to private industry. These initiatives have, in effect, provided a new rationale for the national laboratories: a role to play in the United States' technological and competitive position in world markets. US energy laboratories have been particularly affected by these changes. This paper reports findings from a study of the commercialization of nine energy laboratories. The issues of what makes commercialization successful and what lies ahead for energy R&D in the public sphere are discussed.
