Expert system-based support for advanced technology manufacturing equipment

Abstract: In response to the worldwide competition that they face today, multinational manufacturers are employing more and more advanced technology in their manufacturing operations. To successfully apply this advanced technology, manufacturers must provide adequate support for the equipment - support built around a well-trained workforce. The types of training required to prepare today's workforce for tomorrow's technology will require approaches to training that are new and innovative. This paper discusses the problems related to supporting this advanced technology and proposes an alternative approach to training and equipping the workforce with the kind of innovation that is needed. An approach using artificial intelligence-based expert systems to train personnel in the support of the new technology and then to provide them with a tool to assist them in their support efforts.
