Electronic data interchange methodologies

Abstract: For electronic data exchange linked to integrated information technology to be effective in improving business performance, its application must result in gains which outweigh its costs. To achieve this objective the legal, commercial and technical implications must be carefully evaluated ahead of introduction. Also the systems architecture must match the organisation architecture to ensure clarity of ownership, authority and responsibility for total quality of performance, including the maintenance of operational disciplines. Applications must be business led, not data-processing management led, and a careful use of standards, guidelines to good practice and interfacing rules in a non-bureaucratic way is essential if good order is to be maintained. Modern simpler forms of organisational structure around natural groupings aid the achievement of business objectives through applications of information technology.
