Marching towards a satisfactory FEM graphical user's interface

Abstract: With new operating systems sophisticated new graphics tools have appeared with the aim of facilitating the interaction between the user and the computer. In the Unix world they bear names like Curses, X windows, Xt Intrinsics, Athena widgets (Xaw), Xray widgets and OSF/Motif widgets. The programmer of FEM applications has to be aware of these tools because they ease the user's task considerably. This paper describes some experiences with the new tools which will be employed during the pre- and post-processing phase. The title of the paper hints that we are marching towards a goal and will arrive stepwise at intermediate goals as developments occur. This paper reflects some of the recent steps marked by the products named above.
