Abstract: This paper describes an expert system to be used for diagnosing boiler faults related to energy consumption. Boiler operating data required by the system is processed into some specific indicators and then compared with standards. Based on this comparison, the system detects if there is any fault in the boiler's performance. If there are faults, the system will further diagnose where the faults are and recommend solutions based on rules acquired from human experts, text books or reference manuals. The system is built on a PC AT, and the program is written in Turbo Pascal. It is easy to use, and will help engineers to identify any energy consumption abnormality that is more usually diagnosed by human experts. It also indicates the future for applications of microcomputer-based expert systems for efficient energy management in industry.
