Abstract: This paper presents details of an analytical model for the design calculations of a vane-spring for a rolling piston refrigeration compressor. The model allows both static and fatigue failure analyses to be performed using reliable material failure criteria. In the stress analysis, the spring was assumed to behave like a curved-beam where the bending theory is applicable. In the failure analyses, the distortion energy theory and Goodman approach were used for both the static and fatigue failure analyses, respectively. In addition, a commercially available finite-element method (FEM) software package was used as a guide for finding the spring stiffness for various spring diameters. It is also used to analyse the spring's behaviour and to locate the region of maximum stresses, as well as, a source to provide comparison with solution obtained from the bending theory. The results also show that the stress solution using the bending theory was in good comparison with the more comprehensive FEM results. The exercise shows that the bending theory assumption is valid for the spring configuration examined. The analytical procedures present itself for a possible optimisation of vane-spring design.
