Abstract: The primary goal of this research is to test the technical feasibility of the computer system that POSCO's engineering department plans to develop, by building its prototype. The prototype consists of a CAD system, document editor, scanner, character recognition program, graphic/image editors, document management system on an object-oriented database system, and mass storage. It is implemented on a client-server environment which includes Unix workstations for the CAD system, document management, and mass storage, and personal computers with MS Windows for editing document and graph/image files. Through the prototype, we have shown how the computer system can be effectively built. We have also demonstrated that the current manual process of document preparation can be vastly expedited by automating search, retrieval, and editing of data and documents. Another goal of the research is to propose a way to exchange CAD data among heterogeneous CAD systems in the Pohang and Kwang-yang steelworks. We have investigated several file exchange formats available such as IGES, DXF, DWG, and STEP. Presently, IGES appears to be the best candidate. In the future, however, STEP set by ISO will have to be adopted. We have also considered several aspects, such as document management and file compression, in exchanging engineering data over communication networks.
