Abstract: Reduction of traffic accidents has become an increasingly important issue during recent years with the advance of the automobile society. It has been regarded a key to coping with this issue to investigate thoroughly the behaviour of drivers especially in emergent situations, such as in the case of sudden encountering of an obstacle during driving. Assuming an emergent situation of obstacle avoidance, taking full consideration of the nonlinearity of tyres, this paper studies the characteristics of the driver under the critical condition by way of genetic algorithm (GA). Computer simulations are carried out to find out that the behaviour of the driver obtained by GA agrees very well with general empirical knowledge under such a situation.
