International Journal of Vehicle Design (IJVD), Vol. 15, No. 1/2, 1994

Abstract: A study has been carried out of the application of SPC at an automotive supplier specializing in the manufacture of small, high-precision integrity metallic components. The technique has been introduced successfully and a number of benefits realized. However, there are certain operational difficulties with its use which may lead to frustration if left unchecked. These include: (a) variation in measurement methods; (b) lack of a reaction plan to out-of-control points; (c) failure to note on the chart any additional samples which have been taken and other changes to the process; and (d) a failure to undertake gauge variation studies. These difficulties are discussed together with the means of resolving them.
