Nonparametric estimation of Engel curves in Greece

Global Business and Economics Review (GBER), Vol. 3, No. 2, 2001

Abstract: The objective of this paper is the empirical determination of the shape of the Engel curves in Greece. To this end, we use micro-level data from the 1993/94 Family Budget Survey, the nonparametric Nadaraya-Watson estimator, and specification tests which are consistent in the direction of general nonparametric alternatives. The empirical results suggest that the Working-Leser hypothesis provides an adequate parametric specification of the Engel curves for the nine commodities considered in the paper.
