A membrane finite element program for modelling the sheet metal stamping process

Abstract: This paper deals with the problem of the numerical simulation of the sheet metal stamping operation by a finite element method. A first program based on a simplified hypothesis has been developed. This program is based on a triangular finite element for the shell. We discuss the advantages and specific difficulties caused by this choice. Three aspects of non-linear behaviour arc considered. Large displacements are taken into account through a Newtonian method: variable contact conditions and elastic-plastic behaviour are introduced through a 'tangent matrix' formulation. A strategy for computation with the three above-mentioned non-linearities is suggested.
