Abstract: Organisational trends are polarisng away from hierarchical divisions of labour towards a more fluid deployment based on multi-skilled teams and competent individuals. It is demonstrated that there are measurable efficiency advantages to be gained from such a transition. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of accomplishing the reorganisation, the difficulties met and the implementation strategies resorted to. It is concluded that organisational efficiency can be improved by one order of magnitude. No organisation would seem to require more than 2-3 functions aligned to its main strategic processes.
