Graph notation and kinematic equations of motion of planetary differential gear trains

International Journal of Vehicle Design (IJVD), Vol. 13, No. 3, 1992

Abstract: This paper introduces a graph notation for representing the kinematic structure of simple and compound planetary gear trains efficiently. This simple notation is then used to derive the kinematic equation of motion for planetary differential gear trains without the need to develop any intermediate equations. The absolute rotational speeds for simple and compound planetary differential spur, helical, and bevel gear trains can be easily determined. This equation can be applied to any types of planetary differential gear trains with any number of links by only knowing the gear ratios of all mating gears.
