Abstract: The negative effects of vibrations of the powertrain, i.e. of dynamic forces and moments transmitted from the latter to the car body, can be reduced by the judicious selection of the position and the characteristics of the powertrain. This problem may be successfully solved by using optimisation methods. A modification of the well-known Hooke-Jeeves method was made in this study by introducing the design constraints (by using the method of 'external penalty functions'), and the resultant method was utilised for optimisation of the spatial position and the characteristics of the powertrain mounts of a passenger car. Optimal parameters of the powertrain mounts have brought about a reduction of the vibrations, diminishing also the noise in the interior of the car. It is shown that the optimisation method developed may be successfully utilised in the design and in the reconstructions of powertrain mount systems.
