Development of a control system for a gas turbine powered vehicle

Abstract: A newly developed experimental vehicle powered with a two-shaft, regenerative gas turbine engine, has demonstrated good acceleration performances as a passenger car, thanks mostly to the control system adopted. To improve the acceleration, the control system has to overcome the problem of the time delay in the temperature measurement to be used for fuel metering. This is done in this system by adopting the specific synthetic turbine inlet temperature for its acceleration period only, while the variable nozzle is controlled as a function of gas generator speed for this period. In this paper, the control system will be described in some detail, together with some practical experience.
