Abstract: The technique of propagation of errors developed by Onusic and Douglas to obtain uncertainty ellipses is applied to three specific colours (white, red and yellow) including the covariances of tristimulus values, Cov(Xi, Xj) which were evaluated through its proper definition within an experimental data set. The orientation and size of the ellipses were calculated and compared with ellipses without such terms. The results are applied to illumination and signal devices used with vehicles, in both CIE systems: 1931 (x, y) and 1960 (u, v).
