Analysis of torsion loads on vehicle structures and suspension systems by simplified elastic models

Abstract: Recognising the need for simplified modelling of a variety of complex multi-axled vehicle structural systems, a comprehensive elastic spring model system is developed to facilitate (a) optimal design and (b) computation of ground reactions for torsional loads that arise during complex operational conditions (viz. terrain unevenness, lateral accelerations in addition to high and eccentric loads). Applications of this system for two-, three- and four-axled vehicles are illustrated. The resulting equations and the principal steps involved in computer-aided solutions are delineated. A parametric study of a typical two-axled medium commercial vehicle is attempted, employing a personal computer with the aid of these simplified elastic models. Inferences are drawn from this simple study that are pertinent to both the design and operational parameters of this vehicle and suspension system to demonstrate the utility of the models.
