Abstract: This paper describes an ongoing Applied Research project pursued by Nanyang Technological Institute (NTI), Singapore. The project, codenamed DRIVES (for Driver's Route Information and Vehicular Enhancement for Safety) has the primary objective of developing a prototype low-cost electronics module for retrofitting on vehicles. Developmental work in four main areas is required: sensing equipment and circuitry; microprocessor-based system development; software development (both for the sensing functions and for route-planning); and overall retrofit product design. A two-pronged approach was adopted for the preliminary software design. One prong, the algorithmic thrust, seeks to reduce memory requirements for a minimum-set database. The other prong, the artificial intelligence thrust, attempts to provide a more flexible software system with minimal programming, or reprogramming as the database changes. Although much more remains to be done, the authors believe that there are interesting features to be shared at this stage of the project.
