Abstract: The dominant noise generation mechanism of cross-bar tyres is the sidewall resonance with the tread vibration caused by the collision between the lug blocks and the road. There exist some natural vibration modes at 450 Hz and within the vicinity, which has vibration patterns distributed along the sidewalls. For noise reduction the following three methods are proposed: (1) Spacing the cross grooves perpendicular to the tyre sidewalls; (2) Reducing the hardness of the tread rubber; (3) Increasing the stiffness of the tyre carcass.
