Selection of the frictional characteristic in limited slip differentials

Abstract: This paper presents a theoretical model for determining the frictional characteristic parameters of loading-type limited slip differentials. In this model a vehicle operates on a slope, its longitudinal axis at an angle to the slope line. Within the range of deviation and elevation angles assumed, a location of the vehicle was found where the bias torque should be maximal with respect to the prescribed difference in surface coefficients of friction and actual resistance to motion. On the basis of the data obtained by calculation, ring gear torque factors were determined. The calculations were carried out for differentials with and without preload, and for a wide range of vehicle design parameters.
