Piston design for fuel economy and reliability
by J. Travaille
International Journal of Vehicle Design (IJVD), Vol. 6, No. 4/5, 1985

Abstract: It is clear that today fuel economy and reliability stand high in the priority rating of most automotive manufacturers' programmes. The piston has a contribution to make in both areas. This paper examines various piston features in relation to fuel economy, including weight, friction, top ring location and crown insulation. Reliability is considered with respect to piston strength, including the boss and crown regions, and squeeze casting is presented as offering a major technical step forward, particularly when combined with local fibre reinforcement.
