Experimental investigations on bonded cylindrical joints

Abstract: Although, as a jointing method for metals, bonding has quite a number of advantages, it has so far made only modest gains in significance in the field of vehicle construction. The rather sceptical view of bonding may be due to the lack of appropriate empirical values and calculating standards. In this paper results are described of experiments on bonded cylindrical joints under statical and dynamical loads which have been done as a joint project between Steyr-Daimler-Puch and Loctite Ireland. The practical applicability of these experiments is discussed. In particular the paper describes the following: reaction to deformation of adhesive coat under axial and torsional loads; dependence of nominal shear strength on load direction; computed interpretations of press-fit joints and shrink-fit joints with bonding; the dependence of finite fatigue life and endurance limit of bonded joints on various influential parameters; failing mechanisms of dynamically loaded bonded joints; cyclic softening and hardening effects.
