Technology strategy: internal and external perspectives
by M. Radnor
International Journal of Vehicle Design (IJVD), Vol. 6, No. 4/5, 1985

Abstract: While technology management and planning are clearly of great strategic importance in determining corporate competitiveness few firms have given them their appropriate policy position. This is an era of rapid and accelerating growth of such key new 'driver' fields as microelectronics, new materials and biotechnology. Other pressures are coming from increased resource costs, greater regulatory constraints and fiercely increasing worldwide competition. These factors have combined to heighten awareness of the need to enhance corporate technical understanding and improve significantly the strategic management of technology. This involves both the build-up of internal and external (including worldwide) capacities to develop, acquire and implement new technologies. A framework for auditing such corporate capacity is proposed.
