by I. MacPherson
International Journal of Vehicle Design (IJVD), Vol. 3, No. 3, 1982

Abstract: The basic sciences in diesel engine combustion are considered; direct and indirect diesel engine injection systems are described; and recent developments in the application of high speed engines to light vehicles are reviewed. The latter are discussed with respect to Ford's development aims of confirming the capability of a high speed direct injection system to achieve satisfactory power, engine speed, economy and emissions control; of developing the necessary high pressure fuel injection pumps; and demonstrating a feasible engine that can be mass produced.
