Abstract: In view of the difficulty in analysing the complex vibration modes of an object subject to random excitation, an analytical method using both continuous wave (DFLH) was, developed. It is shown that the natural modes of an object excited by a piezoelectric vibrator under boundary conditions simulating operation can be recorded by CWLH and that these modes can be superposed so as to correspond to the random mode imaged by DPLH. The proposed method was used to investigate and analyse the weighting of the natural modes comprising the DPLH recorded random modes of a shock-excited steel plate and of a dynamometer-operated engine.
