Abstract: Based on the premise that the best way to deal with current constraints imposed upon car engines is by technological advances. Ford Motor Company is developing an electronically controlled lean combustion system to study maximising engine efficiency. This lean burn engine system incorporates electronic engine control, EEC-IV, and a lean EGO sensing device to produce a totally interactive lean combustion system. The ultimate goal is to electronically control an engine in closed loop at lean A/F ratios. Possible benefits include improving fuel economy and reducing the need for EGR and emission control devices. This paper outlines and describes the system components and control strategy, including application data and test results. A modified 1.6L CVH swirl port engine was used to demonstrate the closed loop system. A lean EGO sensor capable of sensing A/F ratios up to 20:l was used as the feedback element.
