Developments in computer analysis and testing technology for front wheel drive transmission systems

Abstract: Recent advances in computer-based analysis procedures and testing technologies are being integrated into the design and development of front wheel drive (FWD) transmission systems. Computer analysis can now break down many hours of complicated service load records. Improve designs and provide realistic rig test schedules. This paper describes some of the latest service load acquisition and analysis procedures that are being used to optimise FWD component systems. The different techniques used for shafts and constant velocity (CV) joints - including rubber boot seals and ball tracks - are outlined. An overview of the different approaches to testing is also provided, and the paper considers some of the latest methods of materials and shaft testing, and the evaluation of CV joints on block programme and real-time simulation rigs. Finally, developments in on-board data acquisition hardware and software and their application for FWD transmissions are examined.
